Topic: The Bible is the foundational authority of Truth Passage: 2 Timothy 3:16

The Most Foundational Verse in the Bible
2 Timothy 3:16
Bible believing Christians often get accused of being narrow minded for their unwillingness to base truth on anything other than the Bible. After all, doesn’t God speak to us through other books such as the Koran, The Apocrypha, The Book of Mormon and the writing of “holy men?” Why limit yourself to the 66 books of the Bible? The answer is simple: It is only the Bible that has been inspired by God. But does this narrow minded view have any scriptural support and if so where? This morning we look at what is arguably the most foundational verse in the entire Bible.

INTRODUCTION: Three Critical Questions:

o Has God spoken?
o Did He speak the truth?
o Where can I find it?

EXPOSITION: 2 Timothy 3:16

· Paul’s Reminder to Timothy of his spiritual heritage: From a child…

· The Most Foundational Verse:

§ God breathed:

§ Breathed out vs. breathed into:

§ It’s Support – 2 Peter 1:20-21

· Three Reminders

§ “Inspiration” applies to the words of scripture and not primarily to the writers.

§ “Inspiration” applies to the words of the text as they are and not as they apply to me.

§ “Inspiration” involves every word of Scripture.

· “All Scripture is God breathed…”

§ Reveals the way of salvation

§ It Equips us in every way

CONCLUSION: No middle ground!
